Dead Island Movie Rights Acquired By Lionsgate

That Dead Island trailer from a few months back, will aparrently be what a future movie from Lionsgate will be based around.

Yesterday, it was announced that Lionsgate had aquired the rights to create a Dead Island movie. According to Deadline, the fight for movie rights started when the trailer from a few months back was released, now finally landing with them. The strange thing is that the movie is going to be based around the announcement trailer.

“Like the hundreds of journalists and millions of fans who were so passionate and vocal about the Dead Island trailer, we too were awestruck,” said Lionsgate’s Joe Drake. “This is exactly the type of property we’re looking to adapt at Lionsgate: it’s sophisticated, edgy, and a true elevation of a genre that we know and love. It also has built in brand recognition around the world, and franchise potential.”

I really don't think this is going to get anywhere. While the game has proven popular and worth making into a franchise, making a movie for it just doesn't make sense. No movie can replicate the tone and setting of Dead Island, especially not one based off of the announcement trailer. I'm going to say that such a movie is just never going to happen as too many things can go wrong with it.
